Core Beliefs and Theology of Gladstone Uniting Church

Core Beliefs

As followers of Jesus Christ, we believe that the life, death and resurrection of Jesus are at the centre of our faith. We proclaim Christ the risen Lord, who reconciles the world to God and calls all people to trust in God’s sovereign grace.

The Uniting Church in Australia’s Basis of Union affirms that “the Uniting Church acknowledges that the faith and unity of the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church are built upon the one Lord Jesus Christ.” We confess that in Jesus Christ “God was reconciling the world to himself,” and that through Word and Sacraments the Spirit sustains and renews the Church for mission.

We believe that the Church lives between Christ’s first coming and the final consummation, called to be a pilgrim people who live in hope and service. By the power of the Spirit, we seek to obey Christ’s will, proclaim the gospel, and bear witness to the unity of faith and life in Christ.

Our Mission

Our mission flows from our faith in Jesus Christ and our calling to join in God’s work in the world. We seek to nurture in all a lively faith in Christ through worship, fellowship, witness, and service.

The Basis of Union reminds us that, in entering into union, the uniting Churches committed their members to hear anew Christ’s call to make disciples of all nations and to obey God’s will through worship, witness and service. In response to that call, we live out our mission in word and action, growing in faith and in service to our neighbours.

Six Mission Aims of Our Church

The Basis of Union urges the Church to witness to Christ’s reconciling work, to share the gospel in word and deed, and to serve the world for which Christ died. In response, our mission aims are:

Support families in our community
Reaching out into the community through our children’s and youth ministry.
Providing opportunities for children, young people and adults to grow in faith.
Providing a sense of belonging and shared faith.
Providing and developing a variety of worship experiences for the congregation and community.
Welcoming new residents to and connecting with our community.

Our Life Together in the Uniting Church

The Uniting Church in Australia is structured to support congregational life and mission, not to constrain it. In the Uniting Church, the local congregation is recognised as the primary expression of the Church’s life in a place. As the Basis of Union states, “The Congregation is the embodiment in one place of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, worshipping, witnessing and serving as a fellowship of the Spirit in Christ.” Wider councils exist to support and equip congregations for worship, witness and mission.

Each congregation belongs to wider councils — the Presbytery, the Synod, and the Assembly — not as authorities over the local church, but as relationships of support, encouragement and shared mission. These levels enable mutual support, theological reflection, and cooperation in mission across regions and across the nation.

This structure honours our belief that the Church is the Body of Christ — a fellowship of disciples called together by the Spirit to worship, witness and serve. The Basis of Union affirms that the People of God are “on the way” together; our life together is one of shared obedience, shared ministry, and shared mission in Christ.
